Gametogenesis and embryogenesis are two sequential processes in sexual reproduction, occurring before and after fertilisation respectively:

Gametogenesis

  • Refers to the formation of gametes — the male gamete (e.g., sperm/pollen's male gamete) and the female gamete (egg/ovum).
  • Involves meiosis, the reductional division, in which diploid (2n) germ cells give rise to haploid (n) gametes.
  • Occurs in the reproductive organs of the parent organisms (e.g., testes/anther for male gametes; ovaries for female gametes).
  • Takes place before fertilisation.
  • Its outcome is the production of haploid sex cells capable of fusing with a gamete of the opposite type.

Embryogenesis

  • Refers to the process by which the zygote develops into an embryo.
  • Begins only after fertilisation — the fusion of the male and female gametes to form a diploid (2n) zygote.
  • Involves repeated mitotic (cleavage) divisions of the zygote, followed by progressive cell differentiation, giving rise to the different tissues, organs, and overall body plan of the developing embryo.
  • Takes place after fertilisation, and continues until a recognisable young organism/embryo is formed. …
