Contraceptive methods: natural, barrier, IUDs, oral/hormonal pills, and surgical sterilisation — each preventing fertilisation/implantation in a different way.

Various methods of contraception (for population regulation):

  1. Natural / traditional methods — no devices or drugs; based on avoiding the fertile period or sperm reaching the ovum:
    • Periodic abstinence (rhythm method) — avoiding coitus during the fertile days (about day 10–17 of the cycle).
    • Coitus interruptus (withdrawal) — withdrawal of the penis before ejaculation.
    • Lactational amenorrhoea — absence of menstruation/ovulation during intense breast-feeding (up to ~6 months).
  2. Barrier methods — physically prevent the sperm and ovum from meeting: condoms (male and female), diaphragm, cervical cap and vault; often used with spermicides.
  3. Intra-uterine devices (IUDs) — inserted into the uterus by a doctor:
    • Non-medicated (Lippes loop), copper-releasing (Cu-T, Cu-7, Multiload-375 — Cu ions suppress sperm motility/fertilising capacity) and hormone-releasing (LNG-20, Progestasert). They increase phagocytosis of sperm and make the uterus unsuitable for implantation.
  4. Oral contraceptives / hormonal methods — pills containing progestogen (± oestrogen), e.g. Saheli (a non-steroidal pill); also injectables and implants. They prevent ovulation and implantation and alter cervical mucus.
  5. Surgical methods (sterilisation) — permanent: vasectomy (cutting/tying the vas deferens in males) and tubectomy (cutting/tying the fallopian tubes in females).

Emergency contraceptives (pills or IUDs within 72 hours) can prevent pregnancy after coitus. All methods aim to avoid pregnancy and help regulate population.
