A test-tube baby results from in vitro fertilisation — fertilisation done outside the body, followed by transfer of the embryo into the mother's uterus.

The term test-tube baby refers to a child produced by the assisted reproductive technology called In Vitro Fertilisation and Embryo Transfer (IVF-ET). It is used to help couples who cannot conceive naturally, for example due to blocked fallopian tubes or low sperm count.

Procedure:

  1. Ova (eggs) are collected from the female and sperms from the male.
  2. Fertilisation is carried out outside the body, in the laboratory (in vitro) under conditions that mimic the body — hence 'test-tube'. If sperm cannot penetrate the egg, a single sperm may be injected directly into the ovum (ICSI).
