ZIFT transfers an in-vitro-formed early embryo/zygote into the fallopian tube; IUI simply introduces prepared semen/sperm into the uterus.

Both ZIFT and IUI are assisted reproductive technologies (ART) used to help infertile couples, but they differ:

  • ZIFT (Zygote Intra Fallopian Transfer): Ova are collected from the female and fertilised with sperm in vitro (outside the body). The zygote or early embryo (up to the 8-blastomere stage) so formed is then transferred into the fallopian tube. (Transfer of an embryo with more than 8 blastomeres into the uterus is called IUT/ET.)
  • IUI (Intra Uterine Insemination): Here there is no in-vitro fertilisation. Semen collected either from the husband or a healthy donor is artificially introduced into the uterus of the female. It is used especially when the male has low sperm count. …
