Pisciculture is the rearing, breeding, catching and management of fish on a large scale for human consumption; it is also called fish farming or fish culture. It is a part of aquaculture and may involve freshwater fish (e.g. Catla, Rohu, common carp) or marine fish.
Types:
- Capture fishery: catching fish from natural water bodies such as rivers, lakes and the sea.
- Culture fishery: rearing and breeding of selected fish in controlled ponds and tanks (aquaculture). To increase yield, composite fish culture (polyculture) is practised, in which several compatible species with different feeding habits are grown together in the same pond so that all zones of water and all types of food are utilised.
Role of pisciculture in the enrichment of our food:
- Fish is an excellent source of cheap, protein-rich, easily digestible food, rich in essential amino acids, vitamins (A and D) and minerals; fish liver oil is rich in vitamins.
