Biofortification = breeding crops for higher nutritional value (more vitamins, minerals, proteins, healthier fats) to improve public health and fight malnutrition. E.g. protein-rich Atlas 66 wheat, vitamin-C-rich bitter gourd, vitamin-A-rich carrots/spinach, iron-rich rice.

Biofortification is the breeding of crops with improved nutritional quality. The aim is to raise the levels of vitamins, minerals, proteins and healthier fats in food crops, so that people who depend on these staple crops get better nutrition and are protected from deficiency diseases (this is a practical means of improving public health).

Objectives of biofortification — breeding crops for:

  1. higher protein content and better protein quality,
  2. higher vitamin content (e.g. vitamin A and vitamin C),
  3. higher mineral/micronutrient content (e.g. iron, zinc), and
  4. higher content of healthier fats (oil quality).

Examples of biofortified crops:

  • Wheat variety Atlas 66 — rich in protein.
  • Maize hybrids with about twice the amino acids lysine and tryptophan.
  • Vitamin-A-enriched carrots, spinach and pumpkin; vitamin-C-enriched bitter gourd, mustard and tomato.
  • Iron-fortified rice; and vitamin-A-rich 'Golden Rice'. …
