Metamerism = same molecular formula but different alkyl groups on either side of a divalent/polyvalent atom such as O, S or N.

Metamerism is a special case of structural (position) isomerism. It arises in compounds of the same molecular formula and same functional group when the total number of carbon atoms is distributed differently among the alkyl groups joined to a central polyvalent atom (oxygen in ethers, nitrogen in amines, sulphur in thioethers, or the carbonyl carbon in ketones).

Why it occurs: the two alkyl groups flanking the central atom can be split in more than one way while keeping the molecular formula fixed.

Example — molecular formula C4H10O (ethers):

  • Diethyl ether: C2H5-O-C2H5
  • Methyl n-propyl ether: CH3-O-C3H7 …
