Acetylene -> (hydration) -> acetaldehyde -> (I2 + NaOH, iodoform reaction) -> CHI3.

Step 1 — Hydration of acetylene to acetaldehyde.

Acetylene adds water in the presence of dilute sulphuric acid and mercuric sulphate catalyst (60 °C). The unstable enol first formed (vinyl alcohol) tautomerises to acetaldehyde:

CH≡CH + H2O --(dil. H2SO4, HgSO4)--> [CH2=CH-OH] -> CH3-CHO (acetaldehyde)

Step 2 — Iodoform reaction of acetaldehyde.

Acetaldehyde contains the CH3-CO- (methyl carbonyl) grouping, so it gives the iodoform test. Treatment with iodine and sodium hydroxide (i.e. sodium hypoiodite, NaOI) first iodinates the methyl group to CI3-CHO, which is then cleaved by alkali to give yellow crystalline iodoform: …
