Aniline's N lone pair is tied up in resonance with the ring, whereas methylamine's N lone pair is freely available and enriched by the +I effect of CH3 — so methylamine is the stronger base.

The basicity of an amine depends on the availability of the lone pair of electrons on the nitrogen atom to accept a proton (H+). The more available and electron-rich this lone pair, the stronger the base.

In methylamine (CH3-NH2):

  • The methyl group is electron-releasing (+I inductive effect).
  • It pushes electron density towards nitrogen, making the lone pair more available and increasing basicity.

In aniline (C6H5-NH2):

  • The lone pair on nitrogen is conjugated (delocalised) into the benzene ring through resonance, spreading over the ortho and para positions.
  • As a result the lone pair is less available for protonation. …
