- H1 receptors — when histamine binds these, it causes allergic symptoms (e.g. nasal congestion, itching, bronchoconstriction). Antiallergic (antihistamine) drugs block the H1 receptors, preventing the allergic response.
- H2 receptors — when histamine binds these (present on the acid-secreting cells of the stomach lining), it stimulates the secretion of gastric acid. Antacid drugs such as cimetidine and ranitidine block the H2 receptors, reducing acid secretion. …
