Both double salts and complex (coordination) salts are formed by combining two or more simple salts, but they behave very differently when dissolved in water.
Double salt:
- It exists only in the crystalline (solid) state.
- On dissolving in water it dissociates completely into all its constituent simple ions.
- These simple ions give their usual (independent) chemical tests.
- Example: Mohr's salt, FeSO4.(NH4)2SO4.6H2O, dissolves to give Fe2+, NH4+ and SO4^2- ions, and Fe2+ answers the tests of ferrous ion. Another example: potash alum, K2SO4.Al2(SO4)3.24H2O, gives K+, Al3+ and SO4^2- ions.
Complex salt:
- It retains its identity both in the solid state and in solution.
- On dissolving, it does NOT give all the simple ions; instead it furnishes a stable complex ion.
- The metal inside the complex ion does not give its ordinary ionic tests. …
