Double salts fully dissociate into simple ions in solution; coordination compounds retain the complex ion intact.

A double salt is an addition compound that exists in the solid crystalline state but completely dissociates into its constituent simple ions when dissolved in water; it does not retain any special complex ion in solution. Example: Mohr's salt, FeSO4⋅(NH4)2SO4⋅6H2OFeSO_4\cdot(NH_4)_2SO_4\cdot6H_2O, dissolves in water to give free Fe2+Fe^{2+}, NH4+NH_4^+ and SO42−SO_4^{2-} ions, each of which can be tested for individually using standard qualitative tests.
