Important ores of copper:
- Copper pyrites (chalcopyrite), CuFeS₂ — the chief ore.
- Copper glance (chalcocite), Cu₂S.
- Cuprite (ruby copper), Cu₂O.
- Malachite, CuCO₃·Cu(OH)₂ (and azurite).
Extraction of copper from copper pyrites (CuFeS₂):
- Concentration: the crushed ore is concentrated by froth flotation.
- Roasting: heated in a current of air — moisture and volatile impurities removed, S oxidised to SO₂, ore partly oxidised: 2CuFeS₂ + O₂ → Cu₂S + 2FeS + SO₂.
- Smelting: roasted ore melted with coke and silica (flux) in a reverberatory furnace; iron oxide (from FeS oxidation) forms a fusible slag with silica: FeO + SiO₂ → FeSiO₃ (slag). This leaves molten 'matte' (Cu₂S + FeS).
- Bessemerisation: matte transferred to a Bessemer converter with silica and a hot air blast. Remaining FeS is oxidised and slagged off, then self-reduction gives copper: 2Cu₂S + 3O₂ → 2Cu₂O + 2SO₂; 2Cu₂O + Cu₂S → 6Cu + SO₂. The product is 'blister copper' (~98% pure).
- Refining: blister copper is purified by electrolytic refining (impure Cu anode, pure Cu cathode, CuSO₄/H₂SO₄ electrolyte) to give 99.9% pure copper.

(i) Chlorine reacts with NaOH:
- Cold and dilute: Cl₂ + 2NaOH → NaCl + NaOCl + H₂O (sodium hypochlorite). …
