The chief ore of copper is copper pyrite, CuFeS2 (copper glance). Extraction steps:
1. Concentration (froth flotation): The powdered sulphide ore is concentrated by the froth-flotation process, since it is a sulphide ore.
2. Roasting: The concentrated ore is roasted in a reverberatory furnace in a supply of air. Sulphur burns off as SO2 and some iron sulphide is oxidised to iron oxide:
2CuFeS2 + O2 → Cu2S + 2FeS + SO2
2FeS + 3O2 → 2FeO + 2SO2
Volatile impurities (As, Sb) also escape as oxides.
3. Smelting: The roasted ore is mixed with silica (SiO2, flux) and coke and heated in a blast furnace. FeO (basic) combines with SiO2 (acidic) to form a fusible slag which is removed:
FeO + SiO2 → FeSiO3 (slag)
The remaining molten mixture of Cu2S and a little FeS, called matte, collects at the bottom.
4. Bessemerisation (self-reduction): The molten matte is transferred to a Bessemer converter. A hot air blast, along with silica, is passed. Remaining FeS is oxidised to FeO and slagged off with silica. Part of Cu2S is oxidised to Cu2O, which then reacts with the rest of Cu2S (auto-/self-reduction) to give copper:
2Cu2S + 3O2 → 2Cu2O + 2SO2
2Cu2O + Cu2S → 6Cu + SO2 …
