The extent of adsorption of a gas on a solid surface is governed by the following factors:

  1. Nature of the gas (ease of liquefaction): Easily liquefiable gases with higher critical temperatures (e.g. NH3, HCl, CO2, SO2) are adsorbed to a greater extent than permanent gases (H2, N2, O2) because van der Waals forces are stronger for them.

  2. Surface area of the adsorbent: The larger the surface area, the greater the adsorption. Finely divided metals and porous substances (activated charcoal, silica gel) adsorb more because they expose a very large surface.
