Homogeneous catalysis = catalyst and reactants in the same phase (e.g. SO2 + O2 → SO3 catalysed by NO gas). Heterogeneous catalysis = catalyst in a different phase (e.g. N2 + H2 → NH3 over solid Fe).

Homogeneous catalysis:

  • The catalyst is present in the same phase as the reactants (usually all in the gas phase or all in solution).
  • Example: In the Lead Chamber process for making sulphuric acid, sulphur dioxide is oxidised to sulphur trioxide by oxygen in the presence of nitric oxide gas: 2SO2 (g) + O2 (g) --NO(g)--> 2SO3 (g) Here the reactants (SO2, O2) and the catalyst (NO) are all gases — same phase. (Another example: acid-catalysed hydrolysis of an ester, all in solution.)

Heterogeneous catalysis:

  • The catalyst is present in a different phase from that of the reactants; most commonly the catalyst is a solid and the reactants are gases or liquids. The reaction occurs on the catalyst's surface. …
