The lanthanides (Ce to Lu) have the general electronic configuration [Xe]4f^(1-14) 5d^(0-1) 6s2.

  • The characteristic and most stable oxidation state of all lanthanides is +3. It arises by loss of the two 6s electrons and one 4f (or 5d) electron, giving Ln3+ ions.
  • In addition to +3, some lanthanides show +2 and +4 states:
