Lanthanides are predominantly +3; a limited number additionally show +2 or +4, so three oxidation states occur overall.

Concept. The lanthanides (4f4f series) have their differentiating electrons in the deeply buried 4f4f orbitals, which are poorly available for bonding. This makes their chemistry far less variable than the d-block.

Oxidation states:

  • +3 is the common and most stable oxidation state, shown by essentially all lanthanides (Ln3+^{3+}).
  • +2 and +4 appear only occasionally, and mostly when they lead to an especially stable empty, half-filled or full 4f4f sub-shell:
    • +2: e.g. Eu2+^{2+} (4f74f^7), Yb2+^{2+} (4f144f^{14}), Sm2+^{2+}. …
