A transition element has an incompletely filled dd-subshell either in its ground-state atom or in one of its common ions. Scandium (Z=21)(Z=21) qualifies — its atom is [Ar] 3d1 4s2[\text{Ar}]\,3d^1\,4s^2 (incomplete 3d3d). Zinc (Z=30)(Z=30) does not — its atom is [Ar] 3d10 4s2[\text{Ar}]\,3d^{10}\,4s^2 and its only common ion Zn2+\text{Zn}^{2+} is [Ar] 3d10[\text{Ar}]\,3d^{10}, both with a completely filled 3d3d.

Definition used (IUPAC). An element is a transition element if it has a partially filled dd-subshell in the neutral atom or in any of its stable oxidation states.

Scandium (Z=21)(Z=21):

  • Atom: [Ar] 3d1 4s2[\text{Ar}]\,3d^1\,4s^2 — the 3d3d subshell holds one electron, i.e. it is incomplete.
  • Therefore scandium satisfies the definition and is a transition element (even though its common ion Sc3+\text{Sc}^{3+} is [Ar] 3d0[\text{Ar}]\,3d^0, the neutral atom already has a partially filled 3d3d).

Zinc (Z=30)(Z=30):

  • Atom: [Ar] 3d10 4s2[\text{Ar}]\,3d^{10}\,4s^2 — the 3d3d subshell is completely filled.
  • Common ion: Zn2+=[Ar] 3d10\text{Zn}^{2+} = [\text{Ar}]\,3d^{10} — still completely filled. …
