Ozone is a strong oxidiser; it decomposes to O2 + nascent oxygen [O], and this atomic oxygen oxidises coloured substances to colourless ones — that is its bleaching action.

Bleaching property of ozone:

  • Ozone (O3) is a very powerful oxidising agent.
  • It is unstable and readily breaks down to give ordinary oxygen and nascent (atomic) oxygen: O3 → O2 + [O]
  • The nascent oxygen so produced is highly reactive. It oxidises the coloured (dye/pigment) material, destroying the groups responsible for colour, and converts it into a colourless substance.
  • Thus ozone acts as a bleaching agent by oxidation (this is called oxidative bleaching).
