NH3 with CuSO4 first precipitates blue Cu(OH)2, which redissolves in excess NH3 to give the deep-blue complex [Cu(NH3)4]²⁺.
Principle of manufacture of ammonia (Haber's process):
- Ammonia is manufactured by the direct combination of nitrogen and hydrogen: N2 (g) + 3H2 (g) ⇌ 2NH3 (g); ΔH = −92.4 kJ (exothermic, and moles decrease from 4 to 2)
- Being reversible, exothermic and proceeding with a decrease in the number of gas molecules, Le Chatelier's principle guides the optimum conditions to get a good yield of NH3:
- High pressure (about 200 atm) — favours the forward reaction because it reduces the number of gas molecules.
- Moderate (optimum) temperature (about 700 K, ~450–500 °C) — a low temperature favours the yield but is too slow, so a compromise temperature is used.
- Catalyst — finely divided iron with molybdenum (or K2O/Al2O3) as promoter, to speed up attainment of equilibrium.
- Unreacted N2 and H2 are recycled.
Reaction of NH3 with CuSO4 solution:
- Ammonia solution is basic; it first provides OH⁻ which precipitates copper(II) hydroxide as a pale-blue precipitate: …
