Step 1 — Structure of NH3NH_3.

Nitrogen in NH3NH_3 is sp3sp^3 hybridised: three hybrid orbitals form N–H bonds and the fourth holds a lone pair of electrons.

Step 2 — Lewis base definition.

A Lewis base is any species that can donate an electron pair to form a new covalent (coordinate) bond. Since NH3NH_3's lone pair is available and not involved in bonding, it can be donated to an electron-deficient acceptor.

Step 3 — Examples.

NH3+H+→NH4+NH_3 + H^+ \rightarrow NH_4^+

NH3+BF3→H3N ⁣→ ⁣BF3NH_3 + BF_3 \rightarrow H_3N\!\rightarrow\!BF_3 …
