A point defect is a local irregularity around a single lattice point in a crystal.

An ideal crystal has a perfectly ordered arrangement of particles. In real crystals, irregularities called defects arise. When the deviation from ideal arrangement occurs around a point, i.e. at or around a single lattice site, it is called a point defect.

Point defects are of three main types:

  • Stoichiometric defects (Schottky — pairs of cation and anion vacancies; Frenkel — an ion displaced to an interstitial site)
  • Impurity defects (a foreign ion occupies a site)
  • Non-stoichiometric defects (metal excess or metal deficiency) …
