Network solids (covalent solids):
- In these solids the atoms are held together throughout the crystal by covalent bonds that extend in all three dimensions.
- The whole crystal is therefore effectively a single giant molecule; there are no separate small molecules.
Properties (a consequence of the strong, continuous covalent bonding):
- Very hard (diamond is the hardest natural substance).
- Very high melting and boiling points, because breaking the crystal means breaking many strong covalent bonds.
- Poor conductors of electricity (insulators), because electrons are localised in the bonds — the exception is graphite, which conducts because of its delocalised electrons.
