Network solids are giant covalent solids in which atoms are joined by covalent bonds throughout the crystal; diamond is a typical example.

In a network (covalent) solid, atoms are linked to one another by strong covalent bonds extending in all three dimensions, forming one giant molecule throughout the crystal. There are no discrete small molecules; the whole crystal is essentially a single macromolecule.

Because covalent bonds are strong and directional, these solids are:

  • Very hard
  • Have very high melting and boiling points
  • Poor conductors of electricity (except graphite) …
