FM = varying the carrier's frequency in step with the message signal's amplitude, keeping carrier amplitude constant.

To transmit a low-frequency message (audio) signal over long distances, it is superimposed on a high-frequency carrier wave — this is called modulation. In frequency modulation (FM):

  • The frequency of the carrier wave is changed (increased or decreased) in proportion to the instantaneous amplitude of the modulating (message) signal.
  • The amplitude of the carrier wave is kept constant.

When the message signal is at its positive peak, the carrier frequency is maximum; when it is at its negative peak, the carrier frequency is minimum; and it equals the original carrier frequency when the signal is zero. The extent of frequency variation is proportional to the signal amplitude, and the rate of variation equals the signal frequency.
