The standard maximum FM frequency deviation used in commercial broadcasting is ±75\pm 75 kHz from the resting (carrier) frequency, giving a range of 98.42598.425 MHz to 98.57598.575 MHz around 98.598.5 MHz.

In frequency modulation, the instantaneous frequency of the transmitted signal is varied above and below a fixed 'resting' or carrier frequency fcf_c in proportion to the amplitude of the modulating (audio) signal. The maximum amount by which the instantaneous frequency is allowed to swing away from fcf_c is called the maximum frequency deviation, Δfmax\Delta f_{max}. For commercial FM radio broadcasting, this deviation is standardised (by international/national telecom regulation) at Δfmax=75\Delta f_{max} = 75 kHz =0.075= 0.075 MHz, which is the value quoted in the standard physics syllabus treatment of FM transmission.

Given a resting (centre) frequency of fc=98.5f_c = 98.5 MHz, the instantaneous carrier frequency is therefore allowed to range from

fc−Δfmax=98.5−0.075=98.425 MHzf_c - \Delta f_{max} = 98.5 - 0.075 = 98.425\ \text{MHz}

up to

fc+Δfmax=98.5+0.075=98.575 MHz.f_c + \Delta f_{max} = 98.5 + 0.075 = 98.575\ \text{MHz}. …
