Current density is current per unit area, J=I/AJ = I/A (a vector along the flow), SI unit A/m². Microscopically J⃗=σE⃗=nev⃗d\vec J = \sigma \vec E = ne\vec v_d.

Definition: Current density at a point is defined as the electric current flowing per unit area of cross-section, the area being taken normal to the direction of current:

J=IA(for uniform current, A⊥flow).J = \frac{I}{A}\quad(\text{for uniform current, } A \perp \text{flow}).

Unlike current (a scalar), current density J⃗\vec J is a vector, directed along the direction of flow of positive charge. Its SI unit is ampere per square metre (A/m²) and its dimensional formula is [AL−2][A L^{-2}].

Discussion / relations:

  • In terms of the drift velocity vdv_d of nn free electrons per unit volume: J=nevdJ = n e v_d. …
