Current density J = I/A — current per unit area of cross-section; a vector, SI unit ampere per square metre (A/m²).

Current density is defined as the electric current flowing per unit area of cross-section of a conductor, measured perpendicular to the direction of flow:

J=IA.J = \frac{I}{A}.

It is a vector quantity J⃗\vec{J} whose direction is that of the flow of positive charge (the direction of conventional current), and for a uniform current the total current through a surface is

I=J⃗⋅A⃗.I = \vec{J}\cdot\vec{A}.
