Volume charge density ρ = charge/volume; SI unit is C/m³.

Definition. When charge is distributed uniformly throughout the volume of a body, the volume charge density is defined as the charge per unit volume:

ρ=qV,\rho = \frac{q}{V},

where q is the total charge and V is the volume over which it is spread. For a non-uniform distribution it is defined as a limit,

ρ=lim⁡ΔV→0ΔqΔV=dqdV.\rho = \lim_{\Delta V \to 0}\frac{\Delta q}{\Delta V} = \frac{dq}{dV}.
