A shunt is a small resistance in parallel with a galvanometer; used to convert it to an ammeter and to protect it from excess current.

Shunt. A shunt is a low-value resistance connected in parallel with a galvanometer. Because it offers an easy low-resistance path, most of the circuit current passes through the shunt and only a small, safe fraction flows through the galvanometer coil. For full-scale current I with galvanometer current I_g and resistance G, the shunt value is

S=Ig GI−Ig.S = \frac{I_g\,G}{I - I_g}.
