A shunt is a low resistance connected in parallel with a galvanometer. It is used to convert a galvanometer into an ammeter and to protect the galvanometer from large currents.

What is a shunt?

A shunt is a small (low-value) resistance connected in parallel with a galvanometer. Because it offers a low-resistance path, most of the line current passes through the shunt and only a small, safe fraction passes through the galvanometer coil.

Two uses of a shunt:

  1. To convert a galvanometer into an ammeter. By choosing a suitable low shunt resistance S=IgGI−IgS = \dfrac{I_g G}{I - I_g}, the instrument can be made to measure a required large current II while the galvanometer coil (resistance GG) carries only its full-scale current IgI_g. The combination then acts as an ammeter of very low resistance. …
