Magnetic moment M=m(2l)M=m(2l) for a magnet and M=NIAM=NIA for a current loop — a vector, unit A·m².

The magnetic (dipole) moment measures the strength of a magnetic dipole and hence the torque it experiences in a magnetic field. It is a vector quantity directed from the south pole to the north pole (for a magnet) or along the area normal by the right-hand rule (for a loop).

For a bar magnet:

M=m×2l,M = m\times 2l,

where mm is the pole strength and 2l2l the magnetic length.

For a current loop:

M=NIA,M = N I A,

where NN = number of turns, II = current, AA = area of the loop.
