Magnetic moment is the strength of a magnetic dipole; m = NIA for a current loop; SI unit A·m².

Explanation. The magnetic (dipole) moment describes how strong a magnetic dipole is and which way it points.

  • For a current loop of N turns, each carrying current I and enclosing area A, the magnitude of the magnetic moment is

    m=NIA,m = NIA,

    and it is a vector directed along the axis of the loop (given by the right-hand rule).

  • For a bar magnet of pole strength q_m and length 2l, the magnetic moment is

    m=qm×2l,m = q_m \times 2l,

    directed from the south pole to the north pole.
