Magnification = image size ÷ object size (linear); magnifying power = angle subtended by image ÷ angle subtended by object seen directly (angular).

Magnification (linear magnification). For a lens or mirror, magnification is the ratio of the height of the image to the height of the object:

m=h′h=vu.m = \frac{h'}{h} = \frac{v}{u}.

It tells us how many times larger (or smaller) the image is compared with the object, and is a dimensionless number attached to a single reflecting/refracting element.

Magnifying power (angular magnification). For an optical instrument (microscope, telescope, simple magnifier) magnifying power is the ratio of the angle subtended at the eye by the final image to the angle subtended at the (unaided) eye by the object placed at the least distance of distinct vision (or at infinity for a telescope):

M=angle subtended by image at eyeangle subtended by object at eye=βα.M = \frac{\text{angle subtended by image at eye}}{\text{angle subtended by object at eye}} = \frac{\beta}{\alpha}. …
