Semiconductors have conductivity between conductors and insulators; conductivity rises with temperature and with doping.

A semiconductor is a material whose electrical conductivity (or resistivity) lies between that of good conductors (metals) and insulators.

Key characteristics:

  • Energy band gap: it has a small forbidden energy gap (Eg≈1 eVE_g \approx 1\ \text{eV}; e.g. Si ≈ 1.1 eV, Ge ≈ 0.7 eV) between the filled valence band and the empty conduction band. (For a conductor the gap is zero/overlapping; for an insulator it is large, > 3 eV.)
  • At absolute zero a pure semiconductor behaves like an insulator (conduction band empty).
  • On heating or on absorbing energy, electrons cross the gap into the conduction band, leaving holes behind, so conductivity increases with temperature (negative temperature coefficient of resistance). …
