Constructive interference needs coherent same-frequency sources and a path difference of nλn\lambda.

Interference is constructive (bright fringe / maximum intensity) when the two overlapping waves arrive in phase and reinforce each other. Two essential conditions are:

1. Path difference condition. The path difference between the two waves at the point must be a whole number of wavelengths:

Δx=nλ,n=0,1,2,…\Delta x = n\lambda, \qquad n = 0, 1, 2, \dots

equivalently the phase difference must be ϕ=2nπ\phi = 2n\pi. The resultant amplitude is then the sum of the two amplitudes and intensity is maximum.
