Sustained interference needs coherent sources (constant phase difference, same frequency) and waves of equal amplitude for good contrast.

For a steady, observable interference pattern the following conditions must be satisfied:

  1. The two sources must be coherent. They must emit waves of the same frequency (wavelength) and maintain a constant phase difference with time. Only then are the positions of maxima and minima fixed, so the pattern is stable. (In practice both beams are derived from a single source.)

  2. The amplitudes should be equal (or nearly equal). Equal amplitudes make the dark fringes truly dark and the bright fringes brightest, giving good contrast.
