The Yamuna drains a chain of north Indian states — Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh — as it flows from the Himalayas to its confluence with the Ganga.

The Yamuna is the great western tributary of the Ganga, and its basin is a story of how one river can tie together very different landscapes. It rises from the Yamunotri glacier in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, then cuts south through the mountains and enters the plains. From there it becomes the lifeline of a broad swath of northern India, passing through or along the borders of several states before it finally merges with the Ganga at Prayagraj (Allahabad) in Uttar Pradesh.

Let’s trace its course state by state, because the answer is not just a list — it’s a geography lesson in how a river’s path defines a region.

Uttarakhand is where the Yamuna is born. The glacier-fed stream tumbles through the high Himalayan valleys, and for a good part of its upper course it forms the natural boundary between Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. So Himachal Pradesh is also drained by the river, even though the Yamuna does not flow deep into that state — it merely skirts its eastern edge.

As the river descends into the plains, it enters Haryana, where it flows for a considerable stretch. Here the Yamuna is not just a water source; it also acts as a state boundary, separating Haryana from the neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh for much of its middle course. This is a crucial point — a river can drain a state even when it runs along its border, because the land on both banks slopes toward the channel.

The river then reaches Delhi, the national capital territory. Delhi is entirely dependent on the Yamuna for its water supply, and the river passes through the city for about 22 kilometres. This is the most densely populated stretch of the Yamuna’s journey, and also the most polluted, but geographically it is a vital part of the basin. …
