Step 1 — Choose a company and gather information

  • Pick a company (ideally one large enough to fall under the CSR law). Collect information from its annual report, CSR/sustainability report, official website, and news articles.

Step 2 — Check the legal framework (Companies Act 2013)

  • Note whether the company crosses the CSR thresholds — turnover ≥ ₹1,000 crore, or net worth ≥ ₹500 crore, or net profit ≥ ₹5 crore.
  • Report on its CSR committee (board members including an independent director), its CSR policy, and whether it spends at least 2% of its average net profit of the last three years on CSR.
  • Remember only activities in India, and not those meant exclusively for its own employees, qualify.

Step 3 — Describe the actual CSR activities

  • Cover the areas the company actually works in. Typical CSR themes (as hinted) include: Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (cleanliness/sanitation), a budding-artists fund, support to start-ups, education, Skill India (skill development), and help for women and other marginalised groups.
  • For each activity, note what the company does, how much it spends, and the impact/benefit to society.
