Why the target group comes early
The target group is the specific set of people or units the project's conclusions will be about — for example "Class XI students of this school" rather than the vague "students".
- Focus — a clearly defined group tells the student exactly who to approach, instead of collecting data haphazardly.
- Comparability — data from a well-defined, similar group can genuinely be averaged, compared or correlated; data from a mixed, loosely-defined group often can't be combined meaningfully.
- Realistic sample size — knowing the group in advance lets the student judge how many responses are actually needed and achievable.
- Honest conclusions — the project's conclusions can only be claimed to hold for the group actually studied; a vague target group leads to conclusions that overreach what the data can support.
