The lesson carries several linked messages.

• Never give up. Andrew succeeds only because he makes “one last effort” after half an hour of failure, when everyone else has accepted defeat. Persistence, the story insists, can achieve what looks impossible.
• Medicine is a calling of compassion and duty. A true doctor does not measure his work by convenience or reward but by the lives in his care; Andrew stays, improvises and struggles because a human life depends on him.
