Mrs Fitzgerald is the Pearsons' next-door neighbour — an older, heavier woman with a strong, almost sinister personality and a deep, rather Irish voice. She is a fortune-teller who "learnt a lot" during twelve years spent "out East," including the magic that lets the two women change bodies. She is bold, shrewd, dominating and practical — exactly the qualities Mrs Pearson lacks.
