Reading Skills: Section A Overview
Section A of the CBSE Class 11 English Core paper (2025-26) is the Reading section, and it carries 22 marks out of the full 80 of the annual paper. It is the part of the paper where no prior reading is rewarded: you are given unseen passages you have never met before, and your marks come entirely from how well you read them on the spot. This is CBSE/NCERT-aligned Class 11 English Core preparation, and the skills here feed directly into every other section too.
You will normally face two unseen passages:
- Passage 1 — a factual or discursive passage (roughly 300-350 words). A factual passage gives information plainly (a report, a description, a set of instructions); a discursive passage argues or discusses an idea (an opinion piece, a reflective essay). This passage is followed by a set of objective-type and short-answer questions that together carry about 12 marks.
- Passage 2 — a factual or literary passage (roughly 200-250 words) set for note-making and summarising, carrying about 10 marks (note-making + summary together).
The question types you must master are therefore: multiple-choice questions, objective fill-ins and true/false, short-answer comprehension questions, vocabulary-in-context items (meaning, synonym, antonym), inference questions (where the answer is implied, not stated), title or tone identification, and the two structured skills of note-making and summary writing.
What is actually being tested is a small family of abilities: literal comprehension (what the text says), interpretation (what it means), inference (what it implies), evaluation of tone and attitude, and vocabulary in context. Speed matters — you have limited time — so the reading techniques in the next section (skimming and scanning) are not optional extras but the core of scoring well. Across this chapter, practise with original passages and the exact CBSE formats so that on exam day the passage is the only thing that is new; your method never is.
