On the atlas: Armenia is a landlocked country in the Caucasus region of West Asia, lying between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, bordered by Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Iran. Assyria was an ancient civilisation of northern Mesopotamia, along the river Tigris, in what is today northern Iraq and parts of Syria and Turkey (John Byro is described as an Assyrian).

The Garoghlanians are an Armenian tribe portrayed in Saroyan's story as a large, close-knit family with many branches. Their most striking trait is their honesty: they had been “famous for honesty for something like eleven centuries,” even when they were once “the wealthiest family in what we liked to think was the world.” They are proud first, honest next, and firm believers in right and wrong; none of them would take advantage of anyone, let alone steal.

Their names — Aram, Mourad, Khosrove, Zorab, Arak — reflect their Armenian heritage. As a people they are spirited and warm, with a famous “crazy streak” passed down the generations (seen in Khosrove and Mourad), a love of horses, and a strong attachment to their lost homeland, for which the elders remain homesick. …
