Theme and Message
The eternal cycle of nature
The poem's chief theme is the unending, self-renewing cycle of water — rising from land and sea, forming clouds, falling as rain, nourishing the earth, and returning to its origin. This mirrors the scientific water cycle of evaporation, condensation and precipitation, showing that nature works in a perfect, continuous loop.
Rain as a giver and nurturer of life
The rain is presented as selfless and life-giving. It washes the dusty, drought-stricken earth and awakens seeds that were "latent, unborn," giving back life to its own source and making it "pure" and beautiful. It asks for nothing in return — a picture of pure, generous giving.
Nature and art are alike
Through the closing comparison of rain to a song, Whitman suggests that art follows the same law as nature. A poem or song, like the rain, is born of its source, travels out to serve its purpose, and — whether appreciated or not — returns with love to where it began.
