Structured data fits a pre-defined schema — the same fixed fields for every record, storable as rows and columns and directly queryable. Unstructured data has no pre-defined organisation — videos, images, free text — and needs extra processing before analysis.

The difference, point by point

AspectStructured dataUnstructured data
FormatPre-defined schema: fixed fields, rows × columnsNo pre-defined format or fixed fields
StorageRelational database tables, spreadsheetsFiles, documents, media stores, data lakes
QueryingDirect — e.g., SQL can filter/aggregate it immediatelyNeeds processing first (text mining, image/audio analysis)
Share of world's dataThe smaller partThe large majority of data generated today
ExampleA student marks tableA recorded video, photos, free-text emails/tweets

One example of each

Structured — every record has the same fields, so it sits naturally in a table:

RollNameMarks
1Asha92
2Bilal85

Name
Asha

Why this works: the query engine knows in advance that a Marks column exists and holds numbers — that guarantee is the structure. …
