The eight components of Ashtang Yoga, in order: Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi — each building on the one before it.

Yama — the five universal codes of conduct towards the outside world: Ahimsa (non-harming), Satya (refraining from dishonesty), Asteya (non-stealing), Brahmacharya (wise use of vitality) and Aparigraha (non-possessiveness).

Pratyahara — withdrawal of the five senses from external objects, turning awareness inward.
