Reading the functional groups off each drawn structure: (a) an aldehyde, an ether

(methoxy) and a phenolic hydroxyl; (b) an aromatic (primary) amine, an ester and a

tertiary (aliphatic) amine; (c) a carbon–carbon double bond (alkene) and a nitro group.

A functional group is the atom or group that gives the molecule its characteristic

reactivity. Identify each one drawn on the structure.

(a) A benzene ring carrying −CHO\ce{-CHO} (top), −OCHX3\ce{-OCH3} (methoxy) and −OH\ce{-OH}

(this is vanillin, 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde). Functional groups: an aldehyde

(−CHO\ce{-CHO}), an ether (the methoxy −OCHX3\ce{-OCH3}), and a phenolic hydroxyl (−OH\ce{-OH}).

(b) A benzene ring with an −NHX2\ce{-NH2} group and, at the other end, an ester

−C(=O)−O−CHX2CHX2N(CX2HX5)X2\ce{-C(=O)-O-CH2CH2N(C2H5)2} that carries a dialkyl-amino group. Functional groups: an …
