Q.A beam is supported at its ends by supports which are 1212 metres apart. Since the load is concentrated at its centre, there is a deflection of 33 cm at the centre and the deflected beam is in the shape of a parabola. How far from the centre is the deflection 11 cm?

The deflection is 11 cm at a distance of 26≈4.92\sqrt{6} \approx 4.9 metres from the centre.

Solution

Model the sagging beam as a parabola with its vertex at the centre (the lowest point). Place the origin at the vertex with xx measured horizontally and yy measured upward from the vertex. Use the form

x2=4ay.x^2 = 4ay.

The two supports are 1212 m apart, so each is 66 m from the centre, and they sit 33 cm above the vertex (the centre deflects 33 cm below the support level). Thus the point (x,y)=(6 m, 3 cm)(x,y) = (6\ \text{m},\, 3\ \text{cm}) lies on the curve:

62=4a(3)  ⇒  36=12a  ⇒  a=3,so x2=12y.6^2 = 4a(3) \;\Rightarrow\; 36 = 12a \;\Rightarrow\; a = 3, \qquad \text{so } x^2 = 12y. …
